Conservation Horticulturist

Melanie Priesnitz
Conservation Horticulturist | Nova Scotia PlantWatch Coordinator

Melanie is passionate about plants, people and the environment. She holds a diploma in Landscape Horticulture, certificates in Applied Plant Conservation and Organic Soil Management. Melanie has been cultivating the native plant collection at the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens since 2000. The labour of love began for Melanie when she was a student of Horticulture at the Nova Scotia Community College and had the opportunity to work on the landscape crew planting the new botanical garden at Acadia. Melanie and the Gardens have been growing together ever since!

When she’s not digging in the earth Melanie spends her time teaching students and community members about the importance of plant conservation. She is the Nova Scotia Coordinator for the environmental monitoring program PlantWatch, a garden columnist for the local paper ‘The Grapevine’ and a teacher for Acadia Lifelong Learning. If Melanie’s not at work or volunteering you can find her walking on the beach with her family, riding her bicycle uphill or teaching yoga.
