Sappho Thompson is a 2024 IB graduate from Cobequid Educational Centre (CEC) and is from Truro, NS. Sappho is a strong advocate for the interdisciplinary nature of environmental studies, and including diverse voices in the fight against climate change. A lifelong musician, Sappho aims to use performance and the arts in her environmental work. Sappho’s love of music has led her down many paths, including performing in community and school musical productions, leading a social justice youth choir, Resonance, and teaching piano at Long & McQuade. She was also the 2023-2024 Music President at CEC and participated in many ensembles while there. Sappho is an active leader in her community and has taken on many volunteer roles including the co-chair of Relay for Life, Varsity Basketball Player, Peer Mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Shared Reader, International Student Ambassador, Student Council Executive Member and a member of many school clubs. For three years (2022-2024), Sappho participated in the Nova Scotia Envirothon, an environmental science competition. In 2023 her team won provincials and attended the international NCF Envirothon. She was the vice president of her school’s Environmental Club where she organized many events that provided opportunities in environmental activism.

Sappho will be pursuing studies in Community Development and Music and hopes to grow as an environmental leader, listener and advocate. She aims to create meaningful and inclusive discussions and work to inspire others to raise their voices and the voices of others in discussions around climate change.
